Motives for Skipping Homework

According to recent studies, homework is a misunderstood concept that has no bearing on

long-term achievement. According to famous educational expert Alfie Kohn, few studies

have found a link between assigning homework to elementary school kids and their academic

performance.

Reason 1: There is no research to support the educational value of homework

You read it right: academics have looked into the benefits of homework and discovered that it

frequently involves repetition and is made to force kids to follow the rules rather than teach

them anything useful. Researchers concur that pupils learn best when exploring the world

rather than sitting down and completing lengthy worksheets, papers, or other standardized

tests.

Reason 2: Homework is detrimental to student's general health and well-being

As we've previously discussed in our blogs, Stanford University researchers were able to

establish a connection between a student's workload and their physical and mental health.

Homework stress can cause various physical and mental conditions, including depression,

alcoholism, anxiety, ulcers, and migraine headaches.

Reason 3: Homework's home component varies.

One study examined whether homework affected a student's grade in a particular subject.

Surprisingly, the data revealed "no substantial difference in grades between students who do

homework and those who do not," as well as no correlation between the number of times

students completed their homework and their marks in the class. Additionally, pupils with

stable homes and parents who can supervise homework completion frequently perform much

better, giving them an advantage over students who lack this support system. Because of this,

kids from households where English may not be the primary language or whose parents are

generally unable or unqualified to assist do worse academically because they lack the benefits

enjoyed by students whose homes have robust domestic aid networks.

Reason 4: Grades and Homework Don't Correspond

One of the biggest myths we propagate to students is that grades and homework completion

do not correlate. Unexpectedly, fresh data revealed "no meaningful disparities in grades

between students who finish homework and those who do not," as well as no correlation

between the number of time students spent on their homework and their marks in the class.

  2. To be honest, this makes a lot of sense. I've always thought that busywork accounted for half of the schoolwork I was given. I didn't learn anything important from it. Some assignments still feel more like checking boxes than learning, even in online classes nowadays. I occasionally question whether it would be wiser to simply pay someone to take my online exam for me so that I can concentrate on actual learning and useful skills rather than constant repetition.
